Half of Working-Age UK Adults Struggle with Maths.

Numeracy for Life Launches Taster Quiz to Bridge the Skills Gap.

Numeracy for Life (N4L) today addresses the UK’s pervasive numeracy crisis by launching its Taster Quiz https://quiz.numeracyforlife.com - a free, low-stakes adult numeracy skills check. The need is critical, particularly for young adults. It is conservatively estimated that over 500,000 NEETs (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) are currently economically inactive in the UK.

The Taster Quiz, leveraging the latest GenAI capabilities, takes less than 10 minutes and focuses on relevant, real-world maths - from budgeting and managing personal finance to workplace scenarios. By being low-stakes but relevant, the tool serves as a vital first step in empowering individuals to identify their skills gaps and seek further support. Neil Salvi, CEO N4L, said:

“We have found this quiz to be an excellent, non-intimidating entry-point for adults to quickly assess and then begin to improve the core numeracy skills they need for life and work. By focusing on practical applications, we remove the fear often associated with traditional maths tests. ”

Dr. Marc North, University of Nottingham – Mathematics Education Asst. Professor, added:

"It is great to see the inaugural International Symposium for Numeracy Education conference held last March having such an impact. The low-stakes, adaptive nature of this quiz, styled along the principles of PIAAC, is exciting. I believe promoting this to both pre- and in-service teachers in the UK may help them re-engage young adults who have had difficulties with maths."

Partner with N4L to Maximize National Impact

Numeracy for Life is actively seeking strategic partnerships with organizations dedicated to skills improvement and economic uplift. The Taster Quiz is not just a tool for individuals; it’s a high-value data engine for policymakers, offering insights essential for shaping effective future skills policy across the UK. This PIAAC-like assessment, leveraging GenAI capabilities, uses standardized, internationally comparable measures, it therefore allows adults to directly benchmark themselves within their working age peer group, something that has not been readily available before.

We invite Government Departments, Educational Charities, and Corporations to join the dissemination effort. To discuss collaboration or for more information please contact:
